Storm Update

Unfortunately it looks like the low is going to track too far to the south to give us the best shot at impressive snow totals. That said, the snow, cold, and wind have settled in and will not be going anywhere in a hurry. Especially the frigid temperatures. While we will likely see light snow continue off and on into Tuesday, it is the sub-zero temperatures that we will really need to watch.
Low tonight: -5 (wind chill -20 to -30)
Tuesday Hi: 0
Tuesday Lo: -19 (wind chill -30)
Wednesday Hi: 9
Wednesday Lo: -4

These images are from the Weather Channel and the NWS respectively. The first showing the current weather with the low tracking south of Colorado, and the second showing the latest snowfall predictions for the region.

For more on the storm and record cold, please see yesterday's post. Stayed tuned for updates on the storm, and edits to the going snowfall forecast if necessary!

Another mega storm barrels through west, may finally bring Denver snow too

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch which is in effect from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning. A winter storm watch means there is potential for heavy snow and wind during this period.

While a watch is a step in the right direction, it would be really great to see them hoist a warning or advisory. Unfortunately too much uncertainty with the eventual track of this storm remains. The good news is, however, that models tend to be trending south - giving Denver its best shot for decent snow - and confidence continues to grow that we will see moderate snowfall. At this time the NWS is calling for 4 - 8 inches of snow for Denver, with 5 - 10 in the foothills and southern suburbs. They do caution, however, that any slight change in the storm's track could greatly raise or lower these numbers. So stay tuned as final forecast adjustments are made in the next 12 to 24 hours!

One constant in all of this is the cold air that is expected to arrive early tomorrow morning. By Friday we may be struggling to get out of the single digits for highs, with gradual warming through the weekend.

Giant winter storm continues to pound the west; will miss Denver

An impressive storm that has churned for days over the southwest has started to push north and east. Denver looks like it will dodge the bullet, with only a slight chance of rain and snow showers over the weekend. Our mountains on the other hand, especially in the southwest, will receive a healthy dumping of snow - 2 to 4 feet of the white stuff! Good news as many mountain locations are way below normal for snowfall this year. Portions of southern California and the higher terrain of Arizona saw anywhere from 5 - 7 feet of snow from this system. Hot damn!

Nothing too impressive looming on the horizon for Denver. January tends to be a pretty slow month for weather here in town, and this year is panning out to be no different. Watching a few shortwaves that may bring a chance for precip during the middle of next week... but we will see.

Monster Storm Set to Bury Nation's Capital, Northeast

All the attention will be focused on the east for the next 12 to 48 hours. A monster winter storm is moving up the east coast, working its way into Washington DC this evening, and later clipping most of the major cities in New England. Snowfall totals will range from 6 to 24 inches, with heavy snow and wind creating blizzard conditions. Here is a quick screen shot of the storm from the weather channel... Notice that Virginia is almost completely covered with heavy snow bands at this hour, and according to CNN they have already declared a state of emergency. Wish I was there! For Denver... This weekend will remain warm and dry. Boring. Next week's weather could change a little as mentioned in my previous post, but thus far nothing too impressive on the horizon. A good bet temps will drop during the middle of next week, and could be talking about some (light) snow at some point as well. Until then, enjoy the 40s, 50s and sun!

Beautiful today... Then SNOW!

Things are about to get real interesting around here, and in a hurry. After a picture perfect day today with highs in the low 70s, the bottom will drop tomorrow as cold airmass from Canada dips south during the day bringing Denver a good chance of snow tomorrow afternoon and evening. Although chances are "likely," the NWS thinks accumulations will be light. Just in case the forecast falls apart and it does not snow tomorrow night, we have another decent chance for snow from Friday night through Saturday. Saturday's highs will likely not break the 40 degree mark.

Denver's average first snowfall is October 19th... Looks like this year that could come early. Stay tuned as details for accumulations, temperatures, and timing will continue to get worked out!
