Cool and wet for Easter Weekend

After a quick reprieve from the unsettled and cool weather today, temperatures are set to dive once more as we head into the weekend. Forecast highs for both Saturday and Sunday are in the low 50s, with a 50% chance of rain and snow. Temperatures will flirt with the freezing mark during the overnight hours, thus a change to all snow periodically is not out of the question. I expect little to no accumulation with warm ground temps and mixed rain. In the mountains, on the other hand, a winter storm warning has been issued where up to 20 inches of snow has been forecast for some locations.

As we move into next week temperatures will remain cool. It looks like a good warm up will not take effect until the second part of the week, with cool air and scattered showers continuing to dominate the forecast Monday through Wednesday.

Snow in May not as cool as snow in December

Unfortunately, weather happens with little regard to how we feel about it. After summer-like conditions today (highs broke 80 degrees in many locations) we are in for a reality check tomorrow. The cold, wet weather - which is not all that uncommon for Denver this time of year - is returning with a punch, dropping highs nearly 30 degrees Thursday from where we were today. Scattered rain and rain/snow mixes are in the forecast nearly every day through the weekend. While lows may drop into the 30s several nights in row, we likely wont be seeing any blizzards here in town... it'll be just cool and wet enough to make things uncomfortable at times.

Not an awesome forecast for all my faithful readers who will likely be attending a moving party Friday and Saturday and then the event-of-the-year Saturday with the Oblio's Arrow CD release at the Larimer Lounge. High Saturday are forecast to be in the low 50s with drizzle. Ugh.

Beautiful today... Then SNOW!

Things are about to get real interesting around here, and in a hurry. After a picture perfect day today with highs in the low 70s, the bottom will drop tomorrow as cold airmass from Canada dips south during the day bringing Denver a good chance of snow tomorrow afternoon and evening. Although chances are "likely," the NWS thinks accumulations will be light. Just in case the forecast falls apart and it does not snow tomorrow night, we have another decent chance for snow from Friday night through Saturday. Saturday's highs will likely not break the 40 degree mark.

Denver's average first snowfall is October 19th... Looks like this year that could come early. Stay tuned as details for accumulations, temperatures, and timing will continue to get worked out!

Big Changes Brewing

While the first day of Fall is not officially until Tuesday, Monday will feel more like Fall than Summer. Over the last several days forecasters have continued to lower the expected highs on Monday as they continue to tweak the forecast details. As it stands, it looks like we will struggle to make it out of the 50s, and lows will dip into the upper 30s for the first time in quite awhile. Clouds and rain are also looking likely for Monday - but it remains unclear how long the soggy weather will stick around as some models have the low moving through much fast than others. From Monday on there is a general warming trend, the exact track of the low will determine how quickly this occurs. At this point it does not appear that 80s will be returning any time next week.

It shouldn't get cold enough for snow here in Denver. Travel 20 miles west and that could be a completely different story. Looks like this cold front will bring the first blast of winter weather for the Mountains and even some foothill locations.

Showers Return

Afternoon showers are in the forecast for the next several days. Already this afternoon the skies have quickly turned dark with some pretty decent thunderstorms developing in the foothills west of town. These storms will slowly work their way east through the next hours... Stay tuned to local media in the event of severe weather outbreaks!

The radar on the right hand side of the page seems to be having some technical problems - I hope to have these resolved asap!

Time to Talk Rain

After highs pushing 80 degrees today and tomorrow a change is in store for the weekend. At this point expect temperatures to stay far to warm for snow, with the rain/snow line being above 7,000 feet. Temperatures will drop down into the 50s for both Saturday and Sunday with a decent chance of rain both days and Saturday night. Exact timing and amounts are still to be worked out, but any moisture is good moisture!

How about some climate talk as well...
Last weeks storm made quite a dent in our precipitation deficit we found ourselves in just a few weeks ago. The airport (where our official records are taken) has recorded 3.62 inches of precip year to date - 1.33 inches of that came last weekend. We are now only 0.09 inches below average for this time of year, with many locations in the area that picked up 3+ inches from the storm probably above average! Hopefully we will add to these totals this weekend!
